Hiring a car in Australia
Make sure you don’t miss out on any of the places you want to see during your trip to Sydney. While there’s lots of excitement in the city and inner suburbs, heading outside of Sydney will offer a completely difference experience. Outside of Sydney, you’ll find some of Australia’s most gorgeous coastal areas, mountains, and more. The public transport links within Sydney are great, but planning a trip to one of the nearby national parks or attractions can be a different story. Plan to explore the Sydney area on your terms with a rental car. Reserving a car rental in Parramatta is a great option due to its proximity to various attractions. Book your cheap car hire in Parramatta, Sydney with Webjet and start planning your NSW adventures.
Things to know before hiring a car in Parramatta
In order to rent a car in Parramatta, drivers must be at least 21 years old and hold a full driving license.Young drivers under the age of 25 may also incur an additional fee along with the cost of the rental car. While renting a car in the Sydney area, you can drive with a non-Australian driving license if it is in English. If your license is in a different language, an international driving permit can be obtained online for a small fee. While driving, keep both your international driving permit and your original license with you at all times.
While renting a car in Australia, it’s important to be covered by car insurance. Some travel insurance plans include car rental insurance, meaning you may already be covered. If not, insurance can be purchased along with your rental car. Most rental car companies offer a variety of car insurance plans that range in price and level of coverage.
If you are driving in the countryside, be aware of wild animals near the roads. It’s common to see kangaroos, wallabies, and wombats while driving in rural areas. If you see any animals while driving, slow down and stay aware of your surroundings as they can enter the road without warning. You are most likely to see these animals at night or around sunset time, so plan to do most of your driving during the day if possible.
Do some research on the places you want to visit with your rental car. In some national parks, certain attractions are located down unsealed roads that are only accessible by 4x4. While a standard car will still allow you to see the majority of hotspots, if there is a certain place you are keen to see down a dirt road, it may be worth paying a bit extra to rent a 4x4.
What to do when hiring a car in Parramatta
The Blue Mountains
The Blue Mountains are one of the top attractions in the Sydney area, and they are just over an hour from Parramatta. The Blue Mountains appear blue in colour as a result of eucalyptus oils from the trees. The area is one of the largest canyons in the world, and it is actually wider and longer than the Grand Canyon. There’s so much to see in the Blue Mountains that you could easily spend several days there. Some attractions to visit during your road trip around the Blue Mountains are Katoomba Falls, the Three Sisters, Honeymoon Lookout, Kiah Lookout, and the Jenolan Caves.
The Royal National Park and Grand Pacific Drive
Within an hour of departing from Parramatta, you can experience the scenic Royal National Park. Due to its proximity to the city, this national park is a favourite day trip destination among Sydneysiders. There are lots of hikes that vary in difficulty with views of the ocean, cliffs, and waterfalls. The Figure 8 Pools and Wedding Cake Rock are the most popular destinations to visit within the park. After spending some time in Royal National Park, continue your drive south along the Grand Pacific Drive. This winding coastal drive stretches to Wollongong offering some stunning ocean and cliff views along the way.
Jervis Bay
While Jervis Bay is nestled on the coastline of New South Wales, it is actually an independent territory that operates as part of the ACT. The territory was formed as a way for the politicans in the ACT to have access to the ocean. Jervis Bay is considered to have the whitest sand in the world, which is a gorgeous contrast to the turquoise-coloured water. Jervis Bay consists of several different beaches, and the best way to see them all is to walk along the White Sands Coastal Walk. The walk takes about 45 minutes without breaks, but you’ll likely want to stop at each beach to take in the views. If you visit in the spring, you may also see some humpback whales making their migration.
Newcastle and the Hunter Valley
Newcastle is located about two hours north of Parramatta and is the second largest city in New South Wales. Newcastle is particularly known for its beaches and surfing, but also has an impressive cafe scene. While visiting Newcastle, make sure to walk along the ANZAC Memorial Walk, take a dip in the ocean baths, and explore Port Stephens. Newcastle is also located close to the Hunter Valley, which is one of Australia’s premier wine-tasting regions specialising in semillon.
